Gerhard Widmer, born in 1961, studied computer science in Vienna and at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Since 2004 he has been professor and Head of the Department of Computational Perception at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz. He also leads a research group at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI) in Vienna. His pioneering work in interdisciplinary research in computer science, Artificial Intelligence and music has been recognised with a number of prestigious prizes and awards, including the Austrian Wittgenstein Prize (2009) and an ERC Advanced Grant (2015).
