About Karajan Research

Taking as a starting point the concept and intention of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation (Herbert von Karajan Stiftung), founded in 1968 by the Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan, the Eliette and Herbert von Karajan Institute maintains and supports numerous research projects from different scientific fields such as musicology, medicine, and computational science. Pursuing the main target of Karajan’s Foundation – “to connect the results of [scientific] works with our knowledge or our thinking about musical interpretation” – all these projects seek to contribute to a better understanding of classical music. One of the projects, though, focuses on Karajan’s legacy itself: by analysing his orchestral interpretations, the inter-disciplinary project “Towards Interdisciplinary, Computer-assisted Analysis of Musical Interpretation” aims to reveal his personal style.
